The Day of Pentecost - June 8, 2014

The Day of Pentecost
It’s About the World!

The Holy Eucharist
The Gathering of the Community
Alleluia! Christ is risen.
The Lord is risen indeed. Alleluia!
May his grace and peace be with you.
May he fill our hearts with joy.

Almighty God,
to you all hearts are open,
all desires known,
and from you no secrets are hidden.
Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts
by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit,
that we may perfectly love you,
and worthily magnify your holy name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Introductory Responsory
God’s love has been poured into our hearts.
To be shared with the world.
God’s grace has put a new song in our mouths
To tell His wonderful deeds
to all the world.
God’s Spirit has filled our lives
To serve and help save the world.
God’s mission of mercy is our mission,
To bring mercy to the world.

Hear what comfortable words our Saviour Christ said to all that truly turn to him.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. ‘Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
(John 3: 16, 17)
Hymn: Holy Spirit We Welcome You

Collect
Let us pray.
Gracious God, a new era has dawned: ushered in by Your Holy Spirit, heralded by rushing wind and flames of fire. Startle our usual expectations and remind us that we are being led outward. O Spirit, come and transform us and our priorities. Fill us and possess us, that the world may know the gifts and blessing of your love. Take away our hesitation and grant us a compelling vision of Your mission. Open our minds and hearts to be signs of hope you seek to share with the world. Help us to go forward in faith and outward in love. For Jesus’ sake and in His name we pray.  Amen.

Confession and Absolution
The Spirit of the Lord fills the world and knows our every word and deed. Let us then open ourselves to the Lord and confess our sins in penitence and faith.

Silence is kept.
Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us, that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your name. Amen.

Almighty God have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and keep you in eternal life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace. If we live in the Spirit, let us walk in the Spirit.
(Galatians 5.22,23)
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
And also with you.

Announcements and Transitions
Hymn-at-the-offertory: I Am the Church,
You are the Church

The Celebration of the Eucharist
The Prayer over the Gifts
Let us pray.
Giver of life, receive all we offer you this day. Let the Spirit you bestow on your Church continue to work in the world through the hearts of all who believe. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord. Amen.

Eucharistic Prayer 5
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.

We give you thanks and praise, almighty God, for the gift of a world full of wonder, and for our life which comes from you. By your power you sustain the universe.
It’s about the world!

You created us to love you with all our heart, and to love each other as ourselves, but we rebel against you by the evil that we do. In Jesus, your Son, you bring healing to our world and gather us into one great family.
Therefore, with all who serve you on earth and in heaven, we praise your wonderful name, as we say (sing),

Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
Hosanna in the highest.

We give you thanks and praise, loving Father, because in sending Jesus, your Son, to us you showed us how much you love us. He cares for the poor and the hungry. He suffers with the sick and the rejected.

Betrayed and forsaken, he did not strike back but overcame hatred with love. On the cross he defeated the power of sin and death. By raising him from the dead you show us the power of your love to bring new life to all your people.
It’s about the world!

On the night before he gave up his life for us, Jesus, at supper with his friends, took bread, gave thanks to you, broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “Take this, all of you, and eat it: this is my body which is given for you.”

After supper, Jesus took the cup of wine, said the blessing, gave it to his friends, and said, “Drink this, all of you: this is the cup of my blood, the blood of the new and eternal covenant, which is shed for you and for many, so that sins may be forgiven. Do this in memory of me.”
It’s about the world!

Gracious God, with this bread and wine we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus, and we offer ourselves to you in him.

Send your Holy Spirit on us and on these gifts, that we may know the presence of Jesus in the breaking of bread, and share in the life of the family of your children.
It’s about the world!

Father, you call us to be your servants; fill us with the courage and love of Jesus, that all the world may gather in joy at the table of your kingdom.

We sing your praise, almighty Father, through Jesus, our Lord, in the power of the Holy Spirit, now and for ever.
It’s about the world! Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer
As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,
Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and for ever. Amen.
Silence

Breaking of the Bread
We break this bread
to share in the body of Christ.
Though we are many, we are one body,
because we all share in one bread.

Prayer after Communion
Let us pray.
Father, may we who have received this eucharist live in the unity of your Holy Spirit, that we may show forth his gifts to all the world. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Blessing of Light
The ministers go to the Easter Candle. A minister says,
Blessed are you, sovereign God, overflowing in love. With Pentecost dawns the age of the Spirit. Now the flame of heaven rests on every believer. Strong and weak, women and men tell out your word; the young receive visions, the old receive dreams. With the new wine of the Spirit they proclaim your reign of love. Amid the birth pangs of the new creation the way of light is made known. Source of freedom, giver of life, blessed are you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
Blessed be God for ever.

Hymn: 465, Here In This Place

During the hymn the flame is transported to the font
and the candles are lit.
Commission
When all the candles are lit the presider says,
For fifty days we have celebrated the victory of our Lord Jesus Christ over the powers of sin and death. We have proclaimed God’s mighty acts and we have prayed that the power that was at work when God raised Jesus from the dead might be at work in us.
As part of God’s Church here in Prince Edward Island, I call upon you to live out what you proclaim. Empowered by the Holy Spirit, will you dare to walk into God’s future, trusting him to be your guide?
By the Spirit’s power, we will.
Will you dare to embrace each other and grow together in love?
We will.
Will you dare to share your riches in common and minister to each other in need?
We will.
Will you dare to pray for each other until your hearts beat with the longings of God?
We will.
Will you dare to carry the light of Christ into the world’s dark places?
We will.
The presider says,
The Lord is here.
His Spirit is with us.
Today we have remembered the coming of God’s power on the disciples and we invite that same Spirit to drive us out into the wild places of the world.

Hymn: He’s Got the Whole World in His Hands

Everyone processes to the back of the church. The presider blesses the people, saying,
May the Spirit, who hovered over the waters when the world was created, breathe into you the life he gives.
Amen.
May the Spirit, who overshadowed the Virgin when the eternal Son came among us, make you joyful in the service of the Lord.
Amen.
May the Spirit, who set the Church on fire upon the Day of Pentecost, bring the world alive with the love of the risen Christ.
Amen.
And the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.
Amen.
A minister says,
Alleluia, alleluia.
Filled with the Spirit’s power, go into the world,
with the light and peace of Christ.
Thanks be to God. Alleluia, alleluia.
